Being a new parent is tough, honestly. I remember standing in the baby shop completely lost when I had to buy a baby blanket. There were rows and rows of them and I didn’t have a clue which one to pick. Here’s what I learned that might help you out.
What’s It Made From
Cotton’s probably your best bet because it’s soft and won’t make your baby sweaty. My sister swears by muslin blankets – they’re really thin and perfect for summer. Bamboo ones are supposed to be good too if your little one has skin problems. Just don’t get those weird scratchy polyester ones from the pound shop.
Size Matters
You’ll want different sizes, trust me. Those tiny square ones are brilliant for wrapping new born babies up tight. Then you need bigger ones for the pushchair when you’re out and about. I’ve got about five blankets now and use them all for different things.
Is It Actually Safe
This bit’s really important. Check there’s no loose threads or dangly bits that could be dangerous. Some blankets have ribbons and tags sewn on – I always cut those off straight away. Better safe than sorry, right?
Can You Chuck It in the Wash
Your baby’s going to sick up on it, spill milk on it, and do all sorts. You need something that can go in the washing machine over and over. I wash blankets probably three times a week. Make sure you wash it before using it the first time because who knows what’s on it from the factory.
Will Your Baby Be Too Hot or Cold
This one’s tricky because babies can’t tell you if they’re uncomfortable. In summer, use something light. Winter needs something a bit warmer but not too heavy. My health visitor said it’s better to use two thin blankets than one massive thick one.
Will It Fall Apart
Some cheap blankets literally fall to pieces after a few washes. Check the edges and feel how strong the fabric is. You want something that’ll last because you’ll be using it constantly for months.
Does It Look Alright
Yeah, it needs to work properly, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting something that looks decent. I got a nice grey one that goes with everything in the nursery. Just don’t sacrifice quality for a cute pattern.
Just Pick One
Look, don’t overthink it. Feel a few blankets. Read the labels, and go with whatever feels right. A decent organic baby blanket will keep your baby comfortable and happy, which is all that really matters at the end of the day.
